I found a traditional hake brush twenty-five years ago, tried it out, and was completely thrilled with it. It was possible to cover the paper quickly and simply, with fewer and more economical strokes, while its size prevented 'fiddling'.

My enthusiasm for this brush soon had me writing books about its use, such as 'Watercolor Fast & Loose', 'Big Brush Watercolor', and many others. These were followed by videos of the same name.

But, the original traditional oriental brush was quite fluffy when new, and required a great deal of wearing-in. I dreaded 'wearing-in' a new brush, so in cooperation with Pro Arte Brushes in Yorkshire, England, we redesigned it.

They found a way to shape it and sharpen the working edge before it was sold, and they now believe the Ron Ranson Hake to be the best, and most easily controlled one in the world.

It seems to have changed the approach of thousands of artists around the world, who wanted to paint loosely, and in a more impressionistic style.

I use this brush for about eighty percent of my painting.

The hake is held delicately as shown, and used with a feather light touch.
